doctor of philosophy in teaching chinese as a foreign language

this program is of the following academic field:
linguistics/chinese language education

i. program duration: 

the normal study period for the students enrolled in this program is 3 years (36 months). the maximum study period for full-time students is 6 years.

ii. teaching form: face-to-face

iii. medium of instruction: chinese and english

iv. admission requirements: 

master degree in chinese or related fields,

  • native chinese candidates should have a certificate of level 2—b or above of psc or an equivalent proof recognized by the university, and one following proof of foreign language proficiency with the lowest score/result: cet-6 450,  ielts 6, an equivalent english proficiency proof recognized by the university, a certificate of language proficiency proof equivalent to cefr b2 level ;
  • non-native chinese candidates should have level six certificate or above of new hsk examination or equivalent level;
  • with the international chinese language teacher qualification certificate or overseas chinese teaching experience will be given priority. 

v. research direction: 

the direction of the student’s research is to be decided upon the completion of all courses of the first academic year with the consultation from his/her supervisor. the research directions should be in line with the overall program objective.

vii. teaching requirements:

  1. students in the program are required to attend all the courses in list (i) and two courses from list (ii) in the first three semesters. teaching methods include lectures of advanced theories, special topic discussions, and guided reading, etc. the students are required to pass an examination or submit an innovative special report. the students’ grades of each course are given based on the overall assessment of their in-class discussion, grades of examination, and special reports etc.
  2. teaching practicum is expected to take place in semester four, upon the completion of which a practice report fitting the college’s requirements is to be submitted. 
  3. after completing the aforementioned 27 credits under list (i) and (ii), students can start writing the thesis proposal. students can start writing the dissertation upon completion of thesis proposal defense. the overall process should follow the dissertation composition flow established by the college. the duration of dissertation composition is approximately 24 months.
  4. the doctoral students should publish a conference paper and a level 2 journal paper during their study period by following the “postgraduate publication guide”. the topic should be related to their dissertation. 
  5. complete dissertation proposal defense and the dissertation should pass the assessment and be defended successfully. 

viii. study time

  1. in general, the duration of taking taught courses is 12 months. the duration of dissertation composition is 24 months, 1 month of teaching practicum included. 
  2. classes will be arranged during the days or evenings of monday to saturday. 

ix. graduation requirements

upon approval from the senate of the university, a doctoral degree will be conferred on a student when he or she has:

  1. completed and met the requirements prescribed in the study plan of his or her program within the specific study period, and achieved a cumulative gpa of 2.50 or above (excluding dissertation)
  2. abided by the regulations of the university
  3. cleared all fees and charges and returned all university property and equipment borrowed
